OPTIMIZE THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION.
“The physical affects the emotional and vice versa,” says Jeffrey Morrison, MD, Equinox Health Advisory Board member and founder of The Morrison Center in New York City. That’s because if you’re stressed, your body goes into fight or flight and the immune system is suppressed. “Half of my day for my patient population is talking about getting the mind into a place where there’s peace so it can help regulate the immune system,” Morrison notes.
The key, he says, is finding a technique that activates the parasympathetic nervous system (the rest and digest part of the nervous system that helps with healing) and doing it consistently, whether it’s a morning meditation, regular yoga class, breathing techniques, or even HIIT (any type of regular movement can be grounding your nervous system). Morrison adds that craniosacral therapy, reiki, and NuCalm, an in office experience where you listen to music at a special frequency, are other options.
QUICK-HIT DESSERT: YOGURT BARK
Rich in probiotics and protein, eating yogurt regularly can help align your digestive system, according to experts. “Thyme brings a savory edge to this bark,” explains New York City–based recipe developer Beth Lipton. The herb balances the sweetness of the fruit and the tangy, rich yogurt. Add more or less honey depending on the tartness of your yogurt and berries and serve the bark as soon as possible, as it melts quickly. “If you like, sprinkle another nut or even granola on top instead of pistachios,” says Lipton.
